United
Orthodox Synagogues Goldberg Montessori School was founded in January
1976 by Rabbi Joseph Radinsky. Ms. B.R. Simon introduced the concept of
Montessori to the program, and Ms. Tinker Paley served as the first administrator.
Hetty Perl assumed responsibility of Judaic Curriculum Coordinator in 1982,
and then moved on to the position of School Director.
UOS Goldberg Montessori is unique in that it is the only pre-school/kindergarten
program in the entire southwestern United States to successfully combine
a rich Judaic curriculum with the motivational Montessori guidelines set
down by Maria Montessori one hundred years ago this year.
UOS Goldberg Montessori, that began with one classroom and a Mother’s
Day Out program, has now grown to 5 primary classrooms (three to six year
olds) and 2 toddler classrooms (two to three year olds). We are proud to
employ a staff of 20 wonderfully dedicated, talented teachers.
UOS Goldberg Montessori is fully accredited by the Texas Department
of Human Services as well as the American Montessori Society. We are proud
of the fact that during a recent inspection, our school was found in be
exemplary in its performance.
The
Montessori concept of education allows children to experience the
joy of learning at an early age and provides an environment in which intellectual,
moral, physical, spiritual and social growth flourish. The classroom is divided
into different work areas ranging from practical life which involves exercises
that help teach care of oneself, the environment and control of movement to
the academic areas such as math and language.
The Judaic component of the program includes daily morning prayers,
blessings before and after eating, the weekly Torah portion, holiday customs
and observance and incorporation of Judaic themes in everyday life, such
as mitzvot.
We also have a marvelous Hebrew Language Program that introduces letter
recognition, reading and Hebrew vocabulary enrichment. This program is a
pull-out program by recommendation of the teacher.
Our goal is to see each child cultivate his or her own natural desire to
learn. Our classroom set-up allows the children to work at their own level
and pace. The children make their own choices and assume responsibilities
as members of the group.
