PRESS RELEASE
United Orthodox Synagogues of Houston will celebrate the life and achievements of its
esteemed member, David Mitzner, on the weekend of April 24-26, 2009, with the
culmination of the celebration at a black tie gala event at The Omni Hotel on Sunday,
April 26, 2009. Mr. Mitzner's life exemplifies survival, rebirth, philanthropy, and a life
long commitment to the Jewish people.
Born in Warsaw, Poland, David Mitzner's extraordinary story began during World War II,
when he undauntedly set up a smuggling and courier operation that helped compatriots
escape persecution from the Nazi regime. He was later imprisoned in the Soviet Gulag
where he survived eight years of hard labor. After the war and the loss of his parents and
siblings in the Holocaust, Mr. Mitzner immigrated to America where he established a
successful real estate business, Rida Development Corporation. He later expanded his real
estate projects to Europe and has become known world wide for his numerous
professional achievements.
A pillar of the Jewish community, Mr. Mitzner epitomizes optimism, strength,
determination, generosity, and an allegiance to mankind. He has selflessly dedicated his
life to facilitating Jewish and worldly charities. Among the various organizations touched
by his generosity are Yad Vashem Memorial, Robert M. Beren Academy, Yeshiva
University, United Orthodox Synagogues, Shaare Zedek Hospital, Osceola Education
Association, and Boys and Girls Clubs. He is a founder and major supporter of The
United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. He further supports
countless other charitable associations throughout Europe, Israel, and the United States.
David Mitzner was married to his beloved wife, Ruth Buchbinder Mitzner
zl, for over fifty
years, in whose memory he established t he Ruth Buchbinder Mitzner Chair in Talmud at
Yeshiva University. He is the proud father of Jacob and Ira and father-in-law to Marilyn
and Mindy, as well as the proud grandfather to Steven, Laura, Michael, George, and
Nathan.
