Bar and Bat Mitzvah Preparation

Celebrating your child's Bar or Bat Mitzvah is one of the most important religious milestones in your family's life.  At UOS, we include your entire family in special programming designed to make your child's Bar/Bat Mitzvah a learning experience for all.

The year prior to the celebration, the child and family are expected to attend Shabbat services to become familiar with the worship service and to learn Synagogue skills.  This also allows the congregation to become familiar with the child, making the Bar/Bat Mitzvah truly a community celebration.

At UOS, girls are given the option of either a Saturday morning or Sunday morning Bat Mitzvah service within a modern Orthodox framework or they can also choose to conduct a Women's Mincha Tefila on Shabbat afternoon. Our banquet halls provide various options for your reception, whether you prefer a buffet luncheon or a formal evening reception.

Currently, a Bar/Bat Mitzvah at UOS is available only to families who are Congregation members. Fees usually include private Bar/Bat Mitzvah instruction with the Cantor or tutor, learning sessions with our rabbi, help with the writing and delivery of the d’var Torah/speech and social gatherings.

TIME LINE

The Bar/Bat Mitzvah process begins in the fall following a child's 10 year old birthday. Dates are assigned in January/February of the following year. Private instruction begins 8-12 months prior to the Bar/Bat Mitzvah date.
